17 Current heating effect
When an electric current flows through any conductor, it encounters resistance. This resistance causes some of the electrical energy to be converted into thermal energy, leading to a rise in the conductor's temperature. This phenomenon is known as the current heating effect, or Joule heating, named after James Prescott Joule who first described it.
