53 Nuclear fission
Nuclear fission is a process where the nucleus of a heavy atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei, releasing a tremendous amount of energy. This energy is harnessed in nuclear power stations to generate electricity. For instance, the fission of just one kilogram of uranium-235 can produce as much energy as burning about three million kilograms of coal.
