Diversity and Recognition of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit
Canada is home to a rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures, yet they are often incorrectly viewed as a single, homogenous group. This course is designed to break down those generalizations by providing a deep dive into the three distinct Indigenous groups recognized under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982: First Nations, Métis, and Inuit. Participants will explore the "Distinctions-Based Approach," learning how each group possesses its own unique governance structures, spiritualities, languages, and historical relationship with the Canadian state. From the Arctic homelands of the Inuit to the unique ethnogenesis of the Métis Nation and the diverse sovereign territories of over 600 First Nations, this course celebrates the vibrant diversity that defines Indigenous Canada today.
