Standardised Death Rates for Population Comparison
Crude death rates, calculated simply as total deaths divided by total population, can be misleading when comparing different populations. These rates do not account for variations in age structure, which significantly impacts mortality. For instance, a town with a large elderly population will naturally have a higher crude death rate, even if its age-specific mortality risks are similar to a younger town.
