The Residential School System in Canada
This course offers a comprehensive and critical examination of the Canadian Indian Residential School system - a century-long policy of forced assimilation. We will investigate the origins of the system, funded by the Canadian government and administered by Christian churches, and analyze the stated goal of "removing the Indian in the child." Students will engage with the lived experiences of Survivors, the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and the intergenerational trauma that continues to affect Indigenous families and communities today. This course is not just a study of the past; it is an exploration of the ongoing resilience of Indigenous Peoples and the collective responsibility of all Canadians to uphold the 94 Calls to Action.
